Welcome to Creatures' Opera

A Rock Opera with Regional Roots

„Creatures‘ Opera – A Story in the Key of Rock“ is the first collaborative rock album by Alex Stix and Axel Balke. The creation of this album is shaped by both artists' individual experiences and their shared musical vision.

The music of Creatures' Opera is rooted in classic rock but surprises with rich orchestral elements that add a special depth to the work. The songs feature powerful guitar riffs paired with screeching organ sounds, as well as soulful ballads with classical string arrangements. The two composers blend power and emotion, rock and classical music, intensity and tenderness.

In 2003, during a hike to the legendary Frankenstein Castle, Darmstadt-born musician Axel Balke had an extraordinary idea: a rock opera that could be performed at the castle - a kind of "horror musical" (a mix of musical and horror stories) with a unique atmosphere. This vision stayed with him for years until about a decade later, when he met Alex Stix, the songwriter and frontman of the band "Perfect Stranger." In Stix, Balke found the ideal partner for this ambitious project.

Alex Stix, who had already released several albums with his band as a composer and producer, was immediately captivated by the idea. In 2017, the two finally began working on the project, which would later be named "Creatures' Opera". Originally planned as a classic Frankenstein story, the creative duo decided to develop their own narrative to allow more room for artistic interpretation and diversity. The story revolves around vain scientists who want to make the world a better place, creatures who frighten people because of their differences, themes of war, love and ultimately hope for a shared, peaceful future.

For the recordings, numerous well-known professional musicians from the region were enlisted, making the album stand out not only for its musical complexity but also for the variety of voices—enhanced by versatile choirs. This makes Creatures Opera a unique sonic experience.

Starting October 1, 2024, the album will be available on all major streaming platforms. Expect a musical journey that combines classical music and rock in a fascinating new form, with the magic of Frankenstein Castle resonating in every note.

The Story

Summary

In a dystopian world plagued by disease, famine, and conflict, Dr. Theodore Hawthorne, a driven scientist, envisions a new species that could save humanity. In secret, he and his team create a powerful creature, Eilian, designed to possess qualities that surpass human capabilities. However, the creation of this new species stirs fear and mistrust among people, leading Eilian to flee into the forest, where he discovers other creatures like himself.

As Eilian and the creatures form bonds, a growing tension between them and the humans leads to a violent conflict, ignited by Victor Stone, a former colleague of Dr. Hawthorne, who harbors a deep grudge. Eilian emerges victorious in battle, but the fight reveals the shared humanity of both sides, sparking a fleeting sense of unity.

Eilian finds solace and love with Genevieve, a maidservant, but societal pressures force them apart. Heartbroken, Eilian withdraws, yet he resolves to continue his journey, driven by hope and the desire for coexistence.

In the end, Dr. Hawthorne and others work toward fostering understanding between humans and creatures, striving for a world where fear and prejudice no longer dictate the course of history.
